How can export controls impact my research at NDSU?

Export controls can impact your research when you are working with technology, information, or materials considered sensitive for national security reasons, particularly when collaborating with foreign national, traveling to certain countries, shipping research materials overseas, or presenting research findings at international conferences where foreign nationals may be present.  Essentially, anytime you might be transferring controlled information or technology outside of the US to a foreign party, even if it is just through discussion or access to data.

Specific scenarios may include (but are not limited to):

  • A physical transfer of an item outside the US
  • Any transfer of a controlled item or disclosure of controlled information to a foreign national while within the US
  • Participation of a foreign national (faculty, staff, or student) in affected research
  • Presentation or discussion of previously unpublished research at conferences or meetings where foreign national scholars are in attendance
  • Research collaborations with foreign nationals and technical exchange programs
  • Transfers of research equipment abroad
  • Visits to you laboratory by foreign scholars.

To learn more, contact the Export Controls office to determine if an export license is needed or to establish a Technology Control Plan.
